Our Lady of Guadalupe
Tepeyac Hill, Mexico City, Mexico · 1531 · Visionary: Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin
The most consequential Marian apparition in history. The Virgin appeared four times to Juan Diego, a poor indigenous convert, asking that a church be built on Tepeyac Hill. As proof, she filled his tilma (cloak) with roses in December — impossible in that season — and when he opened it before the bishop, her image was miraculously imprinted on the fabric. The tilma, now enshrined in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, has been examined by scientists who cannot explain its composition or preservation after nearly 500 years. Within seven years of the apparition, eight million indigenous Mexicans converted to Christianity.
Mary's Message
"Build a church here so I may show my love, compassion, help, and defense to all who dwell in this land."
Significance
The tilma's inexplicable image and the mass conversion of eight million people make Guadalupe the most historically impactful apparition in Catholic history.
